Why is there no design fee?
Because we manufacture the lighting we specify.
We invest our time in the design because our aim is to specify and supply Hudson Lighting as part of the finished project. That means there is no separate charge for the design service.
We are not restricted to using only our own fittings. If another manufacturer's product is better suited to a particular requirement, we can specify that too.
We simply ask that Hudson Lighting forms part of the proposed scheme so that providing the design service remains commercially viable.

Proven at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026
Lighting for the Bat Conservation Trust's Nocturnal Garden.
Hudson Lighting designed and manufactured every light used in the garden: 1800K very warm light, directed downward, with no uplighting. This was the specification used for the Nocturnal Garden at RHS Chelsea 2026.
For new wildlife-sensitive schemes, we have since moved from 1800K to monochromatic amber, guided by the ecological brief. The principles of controlled light, low output and protected darkness remain the same.

A Garden for Every Parkinson's Journey.
For Parkinson's UK, garden designer Arit Anderson and lighting designer Eleni Shiarlis of ES Lighting Design created a garden with a different brief. Hudson Lighting manufactured the fittings.

Our design approach
Darkness is part of the design.
A sensitive scheme does not mean an unlit garden. It means placing light deliberately, using the lowest suitable output and allowing important areas to remain dark.
That often creates a softer, more tranquil result, revealing paths and texture rather than washing the entire site in light.

Keep illumination downward, with no uplighting or light above the horizontal plane in a dark-sky scheme.
Choose the right spectrum
Our current approach for wildlife-sensitive schemes is monochromatic amber rather than 1800K. Monochromatic amber is a narrow-band light source, not a lower colour-temperature white LED. We select the spectrum alongside shielding, output and controls to suit the ecologist's brief; no light source is automatically harmless to wildlife.
Use only enough light
Design for the task and visual effect rather than maximum brightness.
Protect dark corridors
Avoid illuminating hedgerows and waterways. Fade light towards boundaries and protect wildlife movement routes.
Think about time as well as light
Use controls and timing so lighting operates only when it is actually needed.
